Agrimony was revered throughout the Old World as a "heal all." The herb was used in Europe as an eyewash and in China as an astringent and blood purifier. Today, it is used mainly in the treatment of digestive disorders, such as diarrhea, but it is still recommended for relieving tired eyes, coughs and as a gargle for sore throats.

History and Uses:
Agrimony is a highly valued component of modern herbal practice. It is used mainly as a gastrointestinal tonic and also a useful remedy for coughs, skin eruptions and cystitis. In Chinese medicine Agrimony is used to stop excessive menstrual flow (due to its astringency), as well as a cardio-tonic. The herb has also been considered effective in cases of asthma, bronchitis, diarrhea, incontinence, sore throat and as a digestive aid. When used internally or externally, it increases the level of trombocytes, thus improving blood coagulation. Agrimony also has analgesic, anti-inflammatory and antiviral properties. It is an herbal medicine that is thought to be useful for treating mucous colitis (swelling of the colon), bladder leakage (inability to hold urine) and bladder infections. Agrimony is also regarded as a fine gargle for sore throat. The name Agrimony has its origins in both Greek and Anglo-Saxon terms. Argemon is translated loosely as "speck in the eye," as this herb was used as a wash for eye problems. The species name, eupatoria, refers to an ancient Persian King, Mithrades Eupator, a renowned herbalist. Agrimony's flowers have also been employed as a yellow dye. The dried, above-ground parts of Agrimonia eupatoria are harvested shortly before or during flowering and used in herbal medicine. The herb contains polysaccharides, tannins, flavonoids, coumarins, silica, malic acid, phytosterols, vitamins B and K and iron.
